Today we talk about the Rolex submariner black, possibly the most copied clock of all time. Very few visionaries could have foreseen the incredible scope and destiny. This new 1953 model, the Rolex Submariner, would have. Initially, it focused on extreme athletes and professionals involved in high-risk activities. It did not correspond at all with the standards of elegance and distinction of the time.
The Rolex Submariner was not the first diving watch – this is attributed by a few months of difference to the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms – but the Submariner dazzled by its greater resistance to the depths, which is due to the screw crown for which Rolex already had the patent. However, the Fifty Fathoms is still a very appreciated piece for the connoisseurs, which continues in production today.
The real sub: Rolex submariner black
The Rolex Submariner is the submersible wristwatch with rotating bezel created by Rolex in 1953. Thanks to this watch, today we call all watches of this genre with the term “Sub.” Known for its resistance to water and corrosion, with waterproofing guaranteed initially at 100 meters, which soon passed to 200 and 300 meters, it was presented to the public in 1954 at the Foire de Bale, Basel. Originally the first model of Rolex Submariner in production was the 6200, but the models that were presented in that fair were the 6204 and the 6205, practically identical, provided with the caliber A260.
They had straight needles and few differences between them: while the 6204 did not carry the distinctive Submariner on the dial, the 6205 carried it under the center pinion. They did not have the symbol of the cathedral or Mercedes symbol on the hour indicator. It is called that way because of the similarity with the logo of the German brand. Something very linked to the Rolex Submariner throughout its life, a characteristic of all subsequent models.
Evolution of the Rolex Submariner black
The evolution of the Rolex Submariner has been constant. The precursor of the denomination “professional watch,” it has a solid prestige based on the successive innovations. It was incorporated to it until it was an airtight instrument.
Already in 1955, the first evolutions of this model are observed. Since from then they could guarantee the hermeticity to 200 meters of depth, Mercedes needles are born and a bevel with the first 15 minutes recorded. It contributed a sport and special optics.
Also, that engraving on the bezel is of vital importance in the dive, allowing the diver to coordinate the triangle of the bezel with the minute hand and making it possible to accurately track the immersion time and establish decompression phases in the ascent.
The models 6536 and 6538 of the Rolex Submariner were presented, equipped with the caliber 1030 in its first versions. With the bubble-like Bubble Back, which are also known as the James Bond. It was used by the most famous secret agent of the film history: Bond, James Bond. The agent found in Rolex Submariner the perfect companion in their underwater adventures in films such as License to kill and Dr. No.
The Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified qualification appeared, and the 5508 and 5510 models were born. The 5510 model was manufactured until 1962, appearing as a modified version of the 6538.
The next year, important aesthetic modifications were introduced, in particular, protective crown protrusions. The Rolex Submariner thus confirms its sporty character and becomes a reference in the watchmaking sector while passing from 36 to 40 millimeters.
The 5512 was born, the first modern watch of the Submariner saga with the chronometer standard, provided with the calibers 1530 and 1570, with a quadrant that carries the inscriptions and the indicators in white. It includes the oversized crown of 8 mm, creating an authentic innovation and becoming the prototype of the future three-point Triplock, together with the crown protectors. This model maintained its production until 1977. The large crown was introduced to facilitate its use with gloves.
The 5508 is replaced by the Rolex Submariner 5513. However, the 5513, despite having the same calibers 1530 and 1570 model 5512, did not obtain the chronometer certificate. This model maintained its production until 1985. There is also a variation of the models 5512 and 5513 that was called Rolex Submariner Tropicale; It is a less recognized and quite rare version, difficult to find and inexpensive, in which the quadrant is not black but brown, in addition to having the inscriptions in gold.
1680 was born, the first Submariner with the Date function and a thinner glass that allowed incorporating the famous cyclops lens to facilitate the reading of the date. Equipped with gauges 1570 and 1575, is the watch that becomes the cornerstone of the brand and will continue for more time in production, being one of the most valued by collectors. 1680 includes a more particular version, created solely for the North American market, and that incorporates in the quadrant the inscription Submariner in red between the years 1969 and 1975. It does not have a specific serial number and is referenced only with the inscription 1680 It was only made in steel, and the characteristics used in its quadrants are finer than those found in the normal 1680 models.
The first version with the calendar was launched, as well as a gold version. In 1979 the first watch with flat glass was presented, and the waterproofness is guaranteed up to 300 meters. In 1983 the first version in steel and gold was commercialized.
Object of worship
The antique pieces by collectors of watches are very quoted, emphasizing the models 6200/5510, 6204/6205, 6538/6536, 5512/5513 and 5517/1680, for which prices are paid following different scales, and that is to speak of the price of an old Rolex is a pretty relative thing.
The Rolex Submariner has a transition model that occurred between 1986 and 1989; it is the 16800 which, with caliber 3035, is the first variant of a Submariner with sapphire crystal and safety dial.
In 1989 the contemporary models of Rolex were born with the appearance of the substitute of 1680: the 16610, with the caliber 3135 and available in versions of steel and gold the 16613 and in 18-carat gold the 16618. For its part, in the version without date ends its production cycle 5513, giving rise to the birth of 14060 which includes a sapphire crystal.
In 2003 Rolex celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Submariner by presenting a model designed specifically for the occasion, equipped with a dial and a green bezel, which collectors affectionately call Hulk, alluding to the character of Stan Lee’s comic strip. The truth is that it is only a new color, but it put everyone on its head.
Where the Rolex submariner black used?
The Submariner has been used in numerous underwater expeditions with great success, demonstrating the reliability of this piece of modern watchmaking. Even Rolex was surprised by some milestones achieved. For example, the French diving company Comex delivered a Submariner with the name of the company to each of its divers.
Any of these pieces are very sought after by collectors today. It was also used by members of the Moana expedition, where the Submariner proved that it could withstand more than 1,000 dives without problems. Even today the frogmen of the British Royal Navy use the Submariner as their official endowment watch.
Without a doubt, Rolex is the most well-known brand on the planet, and this is due to its powerful marketing management: a clear example of the correct management and administration of a luxury brand.
I know it may be repetitive, but it is necessary because I am talking about the names of each model. Maybe on paper, they only look like numbers, but knowing the difference between one model and another right now has become an art that can make you buy your life or end up losing money. There are many brands in the market with highly prized products. But for the true connoisseur of Rolex is undoubtedly one of the few brands whose products rarely lose value.
As you may have deduced, this time I only referred to the Rolex submariner black. The models Sea Dweller and GMT Master deserve two reports that will also occupy their deserved space in this blog in the near future.
